Anti-Virus is the basic level of your computer protection. There are some minor differences between vendors, but in general an Antivirus include:

• On-demand scanner (you say "scan this map" and the antivirus does it)
• Real-time Protection drivers (some services, running all the time on your PC and deleting any new viruses)
• Sometimes simple forms of firewall/intrusion detection systems/heuristic analysis, helping the real-time protection drivers
